West Monroe Partners, a North American business and technology consulting firm, today announced that Kevin McCarty, the firm’s co-founder and executive vice president, has received the 2011 Robert C. McDermond Medal.
The Robert C. McDermond Center Board of Advisors considers several criteria, including a nominee’s role in creating or growing an entrepreneurial business venture and assisting others in establishing entrepreneurial businesses, as well as his or her creativity and innovation in entrepreneurial leadership. Past award winners of this award include Richard M. Schulze, founder, chairman, and CEO of Best Buy Company, Inc. , David Becker, CEO and chairman, First Internet Bank of Indiana and Angie Hicks, founder, Angie's List
McCarty co-founded West Monroe Partners in 2002 after the dissolution of Arthur Andersen, where he was a senior manager in the Business Consulting practice. In developing West Monroe from a start-up with five employees to a 300-person firm with seven offices across North America, Kevin has emphasized the importance of entrepreneurism in the firm’s culture and operations, including playing a key role in building employee ownership, innovation, and other elements into the firm’s core values. He created the firm’s “chiefs” program, which gives individuals at any level the opportunity to develop and lead non-service functions. Today, West Monroe has more than a dozen such positions, including chief charity officer, chief green officer, and chief recognition officer. He also mentors employees with new business ideas and supports them in developing their ideas, either through West Monroe Partners or on their own.
McCarty’s entrepreneurial spirit dates back to high school and college, when he started computer reselling and consulting businesses. At Arthur Andersen, he applied his interest in business on the Internet by starting an Internet and eCommerce special interest group that later became a worldwide Center of Excellence.
“Early on, I recognized the importance that entrepreneurial motivation plays in developing a business and its role in achieving success, even in more traditional business environments. These are principles that I reinforce, not only in my own firm, but with our clients across industries every day,” said McCarty. “It is a great honor to receive the Robert C. McDermond Medal and to be recognized for something about which I feel so passionate.”
McCarty received the Medal at a September 20 ceremony, during which he spoke with students in the DePauw University Management Fellows Program, an honors program for students interested in business and entrepreneurship.
McCarty is the 16th recipient of The Robert C. McDermond Medal. Nominations for the award may be made to The Robert C. McDermond Center Board of Advisors by any person or group, including staff, students, members of the Board of Advisors, administration, alumni, and the business community.
